Why a 5K for Black Power?

Black Power 96.3 FM Radio is a beloved community radio station, uplifting and empowering St. Petersburg’s historically black south side community. This non-commercial station plays the very best in Gospel, R&B and Hip Hop classics, serves as a venue for new, independent up-and-coming artists, as well as a broadcast engineering training ground for our community. The station also provides a platform to small businesses through our underwriting support program, provides PSA services to community organizations, political education segments and so much more!

This station is a project of the African People’s Education and Defense Fund (APEDF), a non-profit organization created with a mission to address the grave disparities in education, health and economic development for the African community. It relies primarily on the donations of community supporters and listeners, including those who tune in through our mobile app.

This year, Black Power 96 Radio applied for and won federal grant funding to update equipment, including that which would be used for the station’s manager, Eddie Maultsby, who is 100 percent blind. The Pinellas County Commission, in a discriminatory act, pulled the funding, denying the black community access to these vital resources. In just a week, over 600 people signed a petition demanding the resources go back to Black Power 96. Others came out to publicly voice their support for the station and oppose the racist attacks by the commission.

APEDF has filed a lawsuit in defense of the black community’s right to freedom of speech. Black Power 96 Radio needs your support to keep the station on the air!

This Walk-a-Thon is being organized to raise funds, but it is also a community building and bonding experience, calling on the people to, “Get out that bed” for some fresh air, exercise and to show support for Black Power 96.

Whether you’re a seasoned walker or new to the game, this event is open to all. Walk at your own pace and show your support for black empowerment. This is a great opportunity to connect with like-minded individuals and make a positive impact in our community.

Spread the word and invite your friends and family to join us. Let’s come together and make a difference!
