The story of Black Power 96 Radio

We broadcast at 96.3 on the FM dial in St. Petersburg, Florida and can be heard around the world through the stream on our website and through our mobile app.

Black Power 96 Radio (WBPU) is a project of the African People’s Education and Defense Fund, “the baddest non-profit on the planet.”

Black Power 96 Radio’s mission is to defend the human and civil rights of the African community through our educational and cultural programming, to provide professional radio broadcasting training, and to promote economic development and self-reliance in the African community.

Black Power 96 Radio delivers a fresh sound featuring locally produced music and neighborhood news, as well as news and culture from the Caribbean, Africa and the world.

We stand tall as a non-commercial radio station owned and controlled by the black community of south St. Pete where 70 percent of families live under the poverty level and full access to employment, housing, healthcare and quality education is routinely denied.

Among the south St. Pete households served by Black Power 96, 50% do not have internet in the home and rely on FM radio for critical information.

Black Power 96 also addresses these disparities by providing free professional radio broadcast training. Our underwriting program promotes economic development and self-reliance in the African community.
