Restore the grant approved
for Black Power 96 Radio
Donate to the Legal Fund!
Our initial fundraising goal for legal expenses is $2,500. This may increase as the campaign develops. Thank you for your support!
Contribute to the struggle to restore $36,801 in American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funding to the African People’s Education and Defense Fund (APEDF) for its Black Power 96.3 FM community radio station.
The grant funding was recommended by the Pinellas Community Foundation (APEDF’s application was scored 4th out of over 50) and then approved by the Pinellas County Commission in November of 2022. But then in February 2023, shortly after new commissioners took office, in a politically motivated attack, the approval was revoked.
Contribute to the Legal Fund so that APEDF can make a strong legal case to restore this much-needed grant funding, and set a precedent that prevents this type of unconstitutional and discriminatory attack from happening in the future.

About Black Power 96 Radio
Our little community radio station is making a worldwide impact, extending the reach of our local artists to a global audience and producing public affairs programs that tell our own black stories through a wide network of independent radio stations throughout the U.S.
Our Station Manager Mr. Eddie Maultsby, “the world’s best blind DJ,” is building strong and mutually beneficial relationships with the best of our black community musical artists—new and classic, local and international.
He’s organized numerous concerts—in person and online—featuring such luminaries as Gerald Alston of the Manhattans.
His weekly “Local Going Global” contest has helped several unsigned artists to win recording contracts and performing gigs.
Volunteers from around the world
The station’s creative team is growing, with volunteers ranging in age from 14 to 74. Some live around the block while others volunteer their time from the other side of the globe.
The free training provided by Black Power 96 is giving many of these volunteers their first opportunity to do professional radio voiceovers and audio editing.
Black Power 96’s weekly “Local Going Global” contest continues to give radio exposure to the many talented unsigned artists in the black community.
Syndication and podcasting
Two of Black Power 96’s locally produced programs are reaching a worldwide audience, through podcasting and syndication on other community radio stations:
- Black Power Talks (formerly The People’s War show) airs Thursdays at 5pm ET, bringing an African Internationalist perspective to the news of the day. Catch past episodes HERE.
- Reparations in Action airs Fridays at 3-4pm ET with its ongoing series called “White Lies Shattered.” Catch past episodes HERE.
Critical source of info
Black Power 96 continues to provide the most reliable information to help our community survive, thrive and prosper, whether it’s regarding health and safety, economic development or weather alerts.
The value of what we bring to south St. Pete was recognized this winter when we received funding for new equipment through the “American Rescue Plan Act” created to provide relief to hard-hit small businesses affected by COVID pandemic closures.
But our main source of funding and support is YOU! Our listeners and volunteers keep Black Power 96 on air.
Black Power 96 radio is a project of the African People’s Education and Defense Fund, the baddest nonprofit on the planet.
Black Power 96 is not just explaining the world, it’s changing it—with your support!
